Event Details


The Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia in The Netherlands, in collaboration with CinemAsia, is hosting a special Indonesian Film Weekend on December 7 (Saturday) and 8 (Sunday), 2019. The event will be held at Kriterion in Amsterdam and consists of the screenings of Indonesian’s breakthrough and prizewinning animation Battle of Surabaya by Aryanto Yuniawan on the 7th and the official Indonesian entry to the 87th Academy Awards Soekarno by Hanung Bramantyo on the 8th. Both renowned directors will be present in Amsterdam and take part in a special Q&A session after the screening of their film. Besides film, people can enjoy delicious Indonesian snacks.

Battle of Surabaya
Aryanto Yuniawan – 99 min – 2015 – English subtitles
Surabaya, Indonesia 1945. The country is at war while thirteen-year-old shoe shiner Musa slowly develops into a crucial link in the fight for freedom. As a courier Musa is able to sneak secret strategy and war tactic letters to the people. However, his job becomes increasingly more difficult along the way.

Soekarno
Hanung Bramantyo – 137 min – 2013 – English subtitles
During his trial at Laandraad Courthouse in 1930, Soekarno delivered his famous defense oration “Indonesia Accuses”. The aspiring young man who wanted to free Indonesia from colonialism was held captive in Banceuy Prison at Bandung. In 1942 Soekarno returns and later becomes the first president of the Republic of Indonesia. This film follows the life of Soekarno, from his childhood until he managed to proclaim Indonesian freedom with Mohammad Hatta.
